Backlink Builder

We discussed link building before. Building quality backlinks is a great way to ensure search engine success. With an emphasis on "quality", a tool called the Backlink Builder can help you get backlinks in all the right places. Backlink Builder asks you to supply a keyword or theme, and then returns relevant websites that contain phrases like "add link" or "add site." Make acquaintances with as many out as your heart desires, and know that you've given a huge boost to your online campaign. Try it yourself; http://www.webconfs.com/backlink-builder.php

Landing Pages

Pick the keywords you want to target on your homepage wisely. If you have other keywords you want to focus on for SEO you may want to consider creating a landing page.A landing page is in essence like another homepage that funnels traffic into your site. It will provide a fair bit of information with links to your main site. This way if people search for keywords not targeted on your homepage, they can still find you on the major search engines. Creating multiple landing pages for different sets of keywords is very hot right now with SEO, and it works. A good landing page doesn't take long to generate as it should be just one page long and directly link to your site right away.

Link Building

There are 2 types of links that you can get:

One-way links - A one-way link is when another website links to you and you don't link back to them.
Reciprocal links - A reciprocal link is when a website links to you and you link back to them.
One-way links are more valuable in the eyes of the search engines. However, each link has its own individual value based on: how relevant it is to your site, the text in and around the link, how much authority the website that links to you has, etc.
Also, it's important to know that you can get links that have 'no value' in the eyes of the search engines, but they bring you hundreds or thousands of targeted visitors...

What not to do..

Remember back when websites would have massive keyword lists at the bottom or top of the pages? These words were paragraphs long and didn't make any sense at all! The human eye knew that it didn't mean anything, but this text was designed for SEO and to trick the search engines. Sure, it worked for awhile, but now search engines are wise to our tricks. They know these paragraphs are designed only for SEO, which now will get you penalized.

Sitemap will help you get indexed

A site map, in case you're new to this internet thing, is a page from your site that is strictly text links of your site. It is like a table of contents in a book that shows all the links that are presented on your site. Search Engines eat this up, especially the big ones. The best place to put a link to your sitemap is on the main page of your site. This is the first to be indexed. If your site is not SEO friendly atleast the Search Engine will index all the pages of your site.
Here are a few examples of how I applied Sitemaps on sites I created: StudioYAron (top of every page) - About Fencing (top of every page) - HRMarsec (at the bottom next to copyright notice) Note; It does not always have to be a big link, just as long as the spiders can crawl it.

Don't use blackhat SEO

Never try to add keywords or text to a page, in the same color font as the exact background color, thus making text appear hidden or invisible.
In fact don't EVER use hidden text, hidden links or hidden "anything" on a page unless you want to risk setting off some warning flags and risk getting in trouble.
This is blackhat SEO and will quickly get you sandboxed by Google. The may look like the fast way to get you ranked but eventualy you will just shoot yourself in the foot.

Improve your raking by posting content regularly

Your ranking will improve if you update your Web site on a regular basis. But not just updates alone, also consider adding fresh new original content on a weekly. Or even better on a daily basis. If you have a blog like this, posting a link to your sites helps the ranking in search engines. Open Google (click here) and do a search for StudioYaron and see how fast this article will be indexed and at what position. I can do the same thing for my name van Oostrom, Jeroen van Oostrom

Google/Yahoo can crawl Flash content (SWF)

Until now, search engine web crawlers have had lots of trouble accurately indexing text and links that appear in Flash files. For years this roadblock has been the cause of many headaches for web designers, website owners and online marketers alike. (Not to mention searchers who may be missing out on valuable content.) But the bottle of ibuprofen may be going back in the medicine cabinet.
Last night Google announced that it has launched its new Flash indexing algorithm. The new algorithm is a result of the Adobe collaboration. (source: straightup search)

How important is Google in search?

Worldwide, Google is currently providing 78% of all searches.

But in 2007, Google only provided 52% of my website's total search traffic. Yahoo, Windows Live, Ask, and MSN provided the next 42%. The remaining 6% of my website's search traffic came from another 55 smaller search engines.

On my website, only 48.8% of my 2007 traffic actually came from search engines. The remaining 51.2% of my website's quarter million visitors came directly from article placements on other websites, recommendations from other people, forum posts, and from people who have bookmarks for my website.

Be creative

Be creative with your link building strategies. If you have a travel site, what about creating a special area where your clients can post stories and pictures of their recent trip? Don't you imagine your clients would then link to the page devoted just to them?As a bonus, you're also building valuable content for your site.

Cheap hosting and free domain name

Free websites are great but the problem will always be that your site can be deleted at any time. In addition it is hard to make a backup of those free sites and then restore them. I have seen many sites and hard work go down the drain because people wanted to save out on paying a few dollar.
Believe me, it is a good investment to have your own domain. Some let you pay through paypal so you do not need a creditcard. If you start advertising on your website, like google ads you may even get some extra income or play even on your website costs.
Here are 2 hosting companies we recommend:

Keywords

Search for your most important keyword phrases. Carefully go over your top 10 results. Which is the best written title? Which is the most catching? Which is attractive to the reader. Does it want it to make the reader click the link? How can you change a title to make it more interesting and get more traffic. Make a list of title changes, being sure to include your keyword phrase in the title. Put it aside and don't look at it for a couple of days days. Then check it out again and go over it. Get the opinon of other people. Try a new title and see if it improves your traffic. Often little changes can have big results. Also keep a log when you make these changes so you can measure the results.

Local Search

So here is the next free SEO tip for today. When you create a site make sure you include geographical information like your business/home address on your pages. Your information should be included in HTML so the spiders can read it. (so no images of Flash)
A range of spiders are crawling the web to find this information. This way you have a bigger chance to come on top in the search for a business in your area. When you are a webdesigner, you are not limited to where your clients come from. I can just as easy create a website for a client in Brazil as I can for the local supermarket on the corner of my street. There are index sites like the Yellow Pages which are interesting to register with to encrease your local ranking. Believe it or not, most of the times your ranking is more important local then worldwide. Especially for a small busines.
I would like to give you a few links for local search http://www.truelocal.com http://yp.yahoo.com - http://www.superpages.com

Spider spider crawl my web

Yesterday I explained about the importance of links on your site. What does a spider see when it crawls your site? Well, check it out for yourself. Search Engine Spider Simulator. Now I posted this link, it reminded me of another trick you might want to use on your site. Maybe you have links to other sites on your site. Giving them some extra traffic is always nice. As you see, the link I just gave you, has a description of what you can find there. Instead of just posting a link, for example www.google.com extend the description to for example Google Search Engine - Find all the content you need.
This makes it more interesting for people to have a link to and from your site, and it is better for the search engines because you actualy put a description with keywords in it. Another example - www.bikeshop.com (I do not know if this link exists, I just want to give you an example) The BikeShop - For Yamaha and Harley Davidson Bikes and parts.
Ok before I leave you, check out the rest of the site with the Search Engine Spider Simulator, Webconfs.com has a lot of great tools for Search Engine optimization that are free to use. Bookmark it, it is a great site.

What does the spider crawl?

As a web designer and developer I use a lot of Adobe Flash. Nice animated dropdown menus and more eye candy are often (almost always) requested. But Flash is a killer for web spiders trying to index your site. They arrive on your home page and will stumble onto flash menus and descriptions of your site in a Flash animation. The result is that the spider has nothing to index. Because spiders can not read anything from Flash. What I sometimes see is that a client made his own site as one big picture in Adobe Photoshop. This is not good either. When you realy want to use Flash menus on your site, add a sitemap to the bottom of your page. Where you normaly put the part in of; designed by and copyrights. This way the spider gets all the links to your site in one document. Check this site see the sitemap inthe right top corner.
Tomorrow we will check your site to see what a spider can crawl there.

Mongoose

Yesterday I was outside the studio, smoking my sigaret before starting the workday. Suddenly I saw a tail wiggle from behind a parked car. My first reaction was; awww a cat. Then from behind the car came something I did not expect. A sort of oversized rat the size of a small dog. What the hell is that?
When my boss arrived I told her what I saw. She told me this is a mongoose. A snake and roddent eating animal. (ofcourse she had to add that he also eats Dutch people...) They are very common in this country. However living in a city I never see them. But the studio is stationed on an industrial terrain with a lot of green and space. So it can live here. I found a picture on the web. However the one I saw had a more smooth furr. Like a cat. It was also bigger then the ones in this picture.
It moved to fast to photograph it.

It has been a while

I have been posting anything for a long time. Shame on me!

So what has changed since the last time. Well....a lot.
I have moved to Israel to be with my wife Elinor. I started to work as a Tech Support for a company that makes software to speed up downloads and streaming videos. But after 3 months the company made cut backs and together with several other people I was fired. Soon after I started to work for a design studio in Tel Aviv as a graphic and web designer. However my boss was kinda weird. So after a few weeks I got a better offer and changed to a studio closer to home. I have been working there since then and I realy like it. My boss is very nice and we have a lot of laughs from time to time.
It is a small studio. Right now just her and me. She does the design and I turn it into websites. She is in the process of hiring another designer but so far only people that promised mountains but when they had their trial period did not come true.

When I came to Israel we lived in a small appartment in Kiriat Ata. It was not big enough for 2 people, so this summer we moved to a big appartment. It is also a much better neighborhood. Before we lived in a sort of ghetto. Constant people shouting, junkies and stuff. My wife was at home alone once and she heard someone trying to break open the door. She called the cops which only showed up 45 minutes later. I guess that says enough.

We now have 3 cats. That is 2 more then we started out with. First we had Tao. A huge grey cat which is crazy. Then later we got Spot. Spot is a female 3 color.
She has a sweet but naughty character. Recently Elinor saved a kitten from the street. Also a 3 color female.
She is very quiet and does not play much. She just wants to sit with us. We share our bed now with 3 cats. 2 on our legs and the little one wants to sleep under the blankets. Or on my pillow or head. Or any place she can find that is warm. She loves Elinor.

So far my update for today. I added the e-mail for my blog to my new Nokia N95. So I will try to do some more mobile blogging.
Show a bit more about Israel. I do not meet many fellow Dutch people here. I found some recently when I was in the train home from work. I suddenly spotted people speaking Dutch. I first listened to their conversation for a while. Then started talking to them. They were as suprised to stumble in a fellow Dutchie as I was.
